Art in the Shop: Visiting Artist Aldo Moroni
Guided tour and workshop on Saturday, June 2nd, 2018.
Friend of the studio and special guest Aldo Moroni presents a tour of the Mpls Institute of Arts Chinese and South Asian Art Galleries, followed by a work-shop in our studio creating funerary vessels.
Students will meet at Mia at 10:00 a.m. to tour the collection of Chinese Funerary Vessels. After a lunch of appropriate Chinese food, students will return to Potekglass studio in Minneapolis to create funerary vessels of their own.
About Aldo: I am most interested in creating a new social art. An inclusive art that allows the audience to participate in the process . The element of performance is a very important part of my ideology. Permanence and material choice are not a key issues for me. I am interested in the living dialog that my work may create. I am interested in the ways art can enhance our socio- political interactions.
Art in the World: Kimiake Higuchi and Shin-ichi Higuchi
Beloved teachers, Japanese husband and wife team Kimiake Higuchi and Shin-ichi Higuchi literally wrote the book on pate de verre , the technique in which glass powder is packed into a mold or form and then fired. Pate de verre allows for the precise placement of color -- a prominent characteristic of the Higuchi's work.
Kimiake Higuchi's body of pate de verre work is almost entirely based on themes of nature. Flowers, animals, and even asparagus and cabbage are frequent sources of inspiration. Her work frequently begins with "models" picked from her own garden.
The Higuchi's work is included in many significant glass collections. M uch of the Higuchis' studio and about 40% of their artwork was destroyed in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Their newly rebuilt studio at the northern end of Nikko National Park opened in mid 2011.

Cracking the Kiln Code is Malcom's core curriculum. Developed over two decades of fusing glass, these four intense days will provide you with specific firing schedules and projects to help develop your path in kilnforming.

Studio Demo on Sunday 5/20 at noon
We look forward to seeing you at Art-a-Whirl this year! Our studio will be open all weekend with special prices on art, classes, and supplies.
Malcom will be demoing how to use the torch on the final day - Sunday 5/20 at noon. Come visit us in the California Building studio #612! This will be our last Art-a-Whirl in this building (after 14 years) before moving to our new Lowry Avenue building in early fall.
